- ➤ Local restaurant owners and schools stepped in to feed kids amid frozen SNAP funds—while lawmakers in Washington work to reach a deal to help thousands of local families. KCTV 5
- ➤ United Way stepped up after a federal freeze on SNAP benefits left hundreds of thousands of local families without food assistance; the organization announced a meal-packing campaign to help 150,000 individuals and ease rising pressure on food pantries—volunteers will pack meals at events on November 6 and 8 in partnership with local businesses. - ➤ Residents in south Overland Park have enjoyed Bietigheim-Bissingen Park since September 29th with features including a bilingual playground, loop trail, bocce courts, nature boardwalk and water table. Pending final city approval, north Overland Park will soon begin construction on Marty Park near 75th and Metcalf — the new park will include a splash pad, hammock grove, pollinator garden and pergolas. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Due to the government shutdown, millions of Americans who rely on SNAP may face food access challenges after November 1 as USDA contingency funds will not be used—Kansas and Missouri agencies are monitoring the situation, and local food banks are preparing for increased demand. Officials said the pause in federal food aid could affect both SNAP recipients and government employees missing paychecks. KMBC News
- ➤ Air traffic controllers in the Kansas City region, including 40 at Kansas City International Airport (KCI), worked without pay because of the government shutdown and union officials warned extra overtime and stress might push some workers to leave if the shutdown continues. On Wednesday, union workers distributed pamphlets urging travelers to contact Congress to help end the shutdown. FOX 4 KC
- ➤ KC Streetcar’s Main Street extension is managed by a new operations control center that monitored 11 streetcars over opening weekend—using camera feeds to keep stops and pedestrian crossings safe. The center is preparing for further expansion into the Riverfront area to maintain timely service. KSHB
