  • Child care in Kansas and Missouri costs more than in-state college tuition, with some families paying over $20,000 a year and a Johnson County survey showing only 55% of demand is met—experts expect capacity to increase soon.  KSHB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents at Sunset Ridge Elementary remain opposed to the termination of veteran teacher Barb Hart, who was dismissed over two weeks ago for violating the board's Emergency Safety Interventions policy after helping a distressed student. They plan to support her reinstatement through potential legal action and a school board write-in campaign (efforts that could influence future elections).  FOX 4 KC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local organizations are helping Overland Park residents stretch their dollars during a 22-day government shutdown that has reduced food stamp funds—Tiny Pantry Times distributed over 30,000 pounds of food last month to support nearly 5,000 SNAP users.  KCTV 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • Girls flag football players visited the Chiefs on Oct. 22 as part of the NFL’s Salute to Service initiative and Chiefs’ Military Mission program—this field trip brought history to life—breaking barriers in youth sports.  KCTV 5
  • World Cup mascots Maple, ZaYu and Clutch will visit Overland Park and Kansas City on Oct. 25 to greet fans ahead of the 2026 tournament. They will appear at Scheels Overland Park Soccer Complex at 9 a.m. and at Murray Davis Park during Fall Fest at noon — one of 16 host cities for the World Cup.  KMBC News
  • Kansas high school gymnastics will end this weekend after 52 years as the Sunflower League will hold its final meet Saturday at 10 a.m. at Olathe East High School—fewer gymnasts and tougher coach searches made the program unsustainable.  KCTV 5
