COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nationwide 'No Kings' protest rallies will occur October 18 with events planned in the Kansas City metro, including two in Overland Park at 69 Hwy & Metcalf from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at Johnson County Community College from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.—organizers say the protests aim to defend the rule of law and democratic norms.  KCTV 5

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Duke Ommert, a 4th-grade student from Leawood, was hit by a vehicle while riding his e-scooter on Oct. 13 and remains in critical condition at a hospital — tests from yesterday showed no change in his condition as his family thanked the community for its support.  KCTV 5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Amazon's regional lead Andy DiOrio said the company will hire extra workers ahead of the holidays—boosting staffing for increased seasonal demand.  KCTV 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A daycare in Overland Park is using American Sign Language to help infants communicate their needs before speaking, reducing frustration for children and parents—children learn at least 50 signs by the time they reach kindergarten.  KSHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Overland Park received a $500,000 donation from QuikTrip — the funds will be used to create Johnson County’s first Real Time Information Center in the OP Command and Control Center off Hemlock St. City officials said matching city funds will finance new technology to improve police response times, and the center is set to be operational in April.  FOX 4 KC
  • Johnson County’s mediation program has reached 711 agreements over the past three years to help families avoid eviction. Judge McEntee and Commissioner Fast say nearly all cases stay out of court — giving families a rare second chance to keep their homes — amid strict housing rules.  KSHB
