  • GM confirmed that 900 workers at the Fairfax Assembly Plant remain furloughed as the company delays launching its second shift—workers are not expected to return soon.  KCTV 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A principal at Arbor Creek Elementary in Olathe asked some staff members not to wear t-shirts with the word Freedom, which sparked a free speech debate among parents and led to added security after a screenshot of the request went viral. Some parents worry about student safety while others support keeping classrooms neutral, and the district has not yet clarified if the rule applies to all staff.  KMBC News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Best friends Jillian Young and Rylie Lindig—cancer survivors who met during treatment eight years ago—will be honored as Light the Night heroes at Overland Park’s event next Saturday as Blood Cancer United raises funds for blood cancer research and patient support.  KMBC News
  • A local veteran sent an email that confirmed the VA will charge a $15 copay for some fitness classes starting Oct. 1—veterans who are exempt from copays will not pay any fee. Rep. Mark Alford has urged the VA to improve its communication on such changes as veterans worry about the new cost.  KSHB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Trey Smith, a veteran guard for the Chiefs, said he feels honored to guide younger players like rookie Josh Simmons and second-year Kingsley Suamataia ahead of Monday night’s game in Jacksonville. He added that strong mentorship from coaches — Andy Heck and Corey Matthaei — is helping the offensive line prepare for a tough challenge from the Jaguars’ defensive front.  KMBC News
