COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kim Whitman—an Overland Park mom—is leading a nationwide effort to pull kids away from smart phones and shield them from online dangers, as parents in many states work to push for school device bans.  FOX 4 KC
  • Club Car Wash will donate $1 from every $5 wash at its Kansas metro locations this weekend to help Special Olympics Kansas support athletes with disabilities.  FOX 4 KC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • United BioSource LLC announced it will lay off 123 employees from its Overland Park office at 12900 Foster St.—the cuts will affect on-site and remote workers in Kansas and Missouri and will take effect around Nov. 26.  KSHB

CULTURE NEWS

  • Stage setup has begun at the World War I Museum and Memorial lawn for the Chappell Roan concert on Friday—local businesses prepare to celebrate fans with the upcoming event.  KCTV 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Olympic champion Katie Ledecky visited Cedar Trails Exploration Center at Unified School District 232 in Lenexa to encourage students to explore science, technology, engineering, art and math—she linked her experiences in swimming to learning in math and science. She stressed that high school experiences can serve as a springboard for future careers.  KCTV 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • KCTV has detailed the special recall election for county executive Frank White Jr. scheduled for Tuesday—voters will decide his future in county government.  KCTV 5
  • Overland Park is accepting applications for its second property tax rebate program, which gives eligible homeowners up to $624 or 75% back if they paid full taxes in December 2024 and May 2025 (applications are due by Oct. 15).  FOX 4 KC
  • A judge dismissed a lawsuit against state leaders who had refused to send SNAP participants' personal data to the USDA. The ruling means state officials are not required to provide the information.  KCTV 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Royals finished the season 82-80—marking the first time in a decade they ended consecutive seasons with a winning record. The team's general manager and manager reflected on 2025 and looked ahead to 2026.  KCTV 5
