Good morning, Overland Park. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 17th of September.

CRIME NEWS

  • Officer Mike Mosher died in a shootout with a hit-and-run suspect near 123rd Street and Antioch in May 2020, and his family later forgave the suspect's parents—an act that built a lasting bond between two grieving families while honoring his legacy.  KMBC News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Sept. 16, Congresswoman Sharice Davids urged congressional leaders to extend Affordable Care Act premium tax credits before they expire on Sept. 30 so that millions—including over 160,000 Kansans who saved about $700 annually—do not face higher healthcare costs when enrollment begins in November; she warned that without the extension, families may see steep premium hikes that could force them to drop coverage.  KCTV 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nurture KC — partnering with Walgreens — will offer free flu shots at clinics in Kansas and Missouri from Sept. 25 to Oct. 24, allowing walk-ins and pre-scheduled appointments while excluding children under 6. This effort prepares local communities for a healthier fall.  KCTV 5
  • A doctor at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park performed the area’s first non-invasive liver tumor treatment using focused ultrasound waves that liquefy tumors—this breakthrough procedure cleared the tumor in its first patient and two more patients received the treatment, with follow-up imaging scheduled in 3—4 months.  FOX 4 KC
  • A Kansas City doctor warned that Florida’s removal of childhood vaccine mandates could raise risks of preventable diseases in our community and urged residents to keep vaccinating—highlighting that proven public health practices help stop dangerous outbreaks at schools. He reassured locals that Florida’s move is an outlier and not expected to spread here.  KCTV 5
  • Starting Sept. 25 until Oct. 24, Nurture KC will work with Walgreens to offer free flu shots at clinics in the Kansas City metro for residents aged 6 and older. Clinics on both sides of the state line will accept walk-ins and scheduled appointments to keep the community healthy — the program is led by volunteers focused on reducing infant mortality and improving family health.  FOX 4 KC
