  • Metro-area volunteers will start building 14 affordable homes during Rock the Block—an event that will add new housing options for local residents.  KCTV 5
  • Kansas City Chiefs right guard Trey Smith hosted a night of bowling, pizza and fun for over 80 kids from the Kansas City Youth Football and Cheer League at Park Lanes on Monday, where they bowled, played arcade games and received autographs. He partnered with Strikes for Kids and said he wants the youth to stay active—using his platform to give back while his team seeks a win after an 0-2 start.  KCTV 5

CRIME NEWS

  • A memorial now sits in front of El Mercado Fresco on Longview Road for Gande Salamed— a Hispanic grocery store co-owner killed in a shooting— as locals remember his impact.  KCTV 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • KMBC 9 Cares for Kids and Lead to Read KC are teaming up across 33 local schools to boost reading skills by recruiting volunteers who commit one lunch hour a week—helping children who are falling behind. They aim to add 50 new mentors and raise money to buy 1000 new books so more kids can enjoy reading and build confidence.  KMBC News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Frank White attended a PBS town hall to discuss the special recall election—he said he had been in office longer than the dysfunction had existed.  KCTV 5
  • Overland Park City Council approved a $22 million contract to buy police technology that includes body-worn cameras+ in-car cameras, interview room cameras, virtual reality training tools and drones to support first responders. Officials said the equipment will modernize police work soon.  KCTV 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Layne Strookman, a 35-year-old nurse practitioner and mother at Saint Luke's, suffered her first heart attack six weeks after giving birth when a tear in her heart artery—known as SCAD—forced her into emergency triple bypass surgery and ICU care; she now works full time while sharing her story to alert other women to this rare condition.  KSHB
  • A Metro student-run clinic offers free medical services and physical therapy to local community members—student volunteers and health professionals work together to provide essential care.  KCTV 5

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Abigail and Grant face a setback as Pinstripes in Overland Park abruptly closed and filed for Chapter 11—leaving them without a venue for their wedding scheduled for November 1 and losing a $6,500 deposit. They are now searching for a new venue while filing a claim and accepting support from the Raphael Hotel.  KCTV 5
