ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A truck driver from Tennessee died in a crossover crash on Interstate 35 in Franklin County when his 2023 Freightliner drifted into a grassy median near Sand Creek Road on Thursday morning and a second semi driver was seriously injured.  KSHB
  • On Friday, Aug. 15, 2025, firefighters responded to an outside fire at 10107 W. 105th Street in Overland Park — the building housing the JoCo GOP offices and Damage Hitters baseball batting facility had no injuries or significant damage.  KSHB

CRIME NEWS

  • A woman accused of fatally shooting her husband claimed she did so to prevent just that — and she could face the death penalty.  KCTV 5
  • Matthew Karabas from New Jersey was sentenced to more than eight years in prison by Johnson County District Court after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter while under the influence and attempted aggravated battery for a wrong-way crash on I-35 near Edgerton that killed his passenger Eric Diaz — other charges were dropped.  FOX 4 KC
  • Blue Springs man Joseph T. Miller pleaded guilty for selling a controlled substance that caused the death of Mason Findley in Johnson County—Miller is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 8.  KCTV 5

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local bakery Donutology celebrated Taylor Swift’s album announcement by launching Swift-inspired treats on August 15th.  KCTV 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, a Royals-themed children’s book called Franklin’s Winning Season will launch in local schools and libraries to boost youth literacy in the Kansas City metro. The book was created by local authors and will be given to the first 5,000 kids 14 and under at the Royals and White Sox game—Teacher’s Night.  KCTV 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday night, the Johnson County Board of Commissioners approved a conditional award of $2.38 million in federal funds to Metro Lutheran Ministry—intended to support new rental units for homeless individuals.  KCTV 5
