Good morning, Overland Park. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 6th of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The National Night Out event was held yesterday in Overland Park—neighbors gathered at Sapling Grove Park and Windham Hill Park from 5 to 7 p.m. to connect with local police and learn ways to prevent crime.  KCTV 5
  • Local nonprofit Artists Helping the Homeless launched a car off a cliff in Alaska a few weeks ago to raise funds for its programs and exceeded its goal through a surge of online donations—an effort that sparked real support for its work. The donations will support its respite house and continuous care program for unhoused people.  KSHB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Zarda Bar-B-Q will serve a new menu at Chiefs Training Camp by adding 1,500 chicken wings in hot honey, thunderberry, dry rub, and plain to its usual burnt ends, ribs, and sides for the 37th year of support. The business, which operates in Lenexa and Blue Springs, will bring fresh flavors to players while continuing its longstanding tradition—its new wing offerings aim to excite both players and fans.  KMBC News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new autism center opened on Tuesday near 87th and Marshall Drive in Overland Park to help adults with autism learn job and social skills. Founder Jay Cross started the nonprofit six months ago after discovering few options for adults once children turn 18 and noted that care can cost families about $250,000 a year while subsidies take 10 years to be approved — a gap he hopes the center will close.  FOX 4 KC
