- ➤ Governor Kelly declared August as Kansas No-Kill Shelter Month to boost care for adoptable pets and help the state aim for a no-kill status in 2025. Best Friends Animal Society said 53 of 71 shelters met the goal in 2024 and urged Kansans to adopt, foster, volunteer, and donate — efforts that could save more pet lives. KCTV 5

- ➤ Former KCK O'Reilly's store manager Carl Kemppainen was convicted in May of involuntary manslaughter for the death of 23-year-old Diamond Steen—he is set to serve nearly five years. KCTV 5

- ➤ NOCSAE released its first safety standard for youth football helmets after research showed young players face higher head impact forces—manufacturers must now design helmets weighing no more than 3.5 pounds—and the new standard will take effect on March 1, 2027 to improve concussion protection.
