COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Overland Park police will park cruisers outside three Target stores this month to collect school supply donations for local students as part of the annual Fill the Cruiser fundraiser. The donations will fill 300 backpacks for Shawnee Mission and Blue Valley school districts — they will be distributed during National Night Out on August 5.  KSHB
  • Johnson County Library’s MakerSpace is helping local families save money this back-to-school season by offering free machines like a laser cutter and 3D printers—parents customize water bottles, door designs, and even print parts to repair bicycles while the space now offers 20 extra hours a week thanks to new funding.  KSHB

  • Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall toured Indra Air Traffic in Overland Park on Friday to review new air control technology amid ongoing safety concerns. The company plans a $12.5 billion upgrade to replace 40-year-old radars — a move that officials say could ease staffing gaps.  KSHB

HEALTH NEWS

  • Johnson County officials urged residents to practice water safety this summer after emergency crews responded to nearly twice as many drowning calls as last year—calls that underscore risks in residential pools—and warned parents to keep children within arm’s reach. Officials recommended installing pool barriers, using approved life jackets, and learning CPR to reduce drowning risks.  KCTV 5
  • American Century Championship airs this weekend on KSHB 41 from Lake Tahoe and will benefit Kansas City's Stowers Institute for Medical Research—an institution known for its work on coral reproduction and gene regulation using AI. Stars from TV—film and sports, including the Kelce brothers, will compete at Edgewood Golf Course as the tournament helps raise funds for groundbreaking research.  KSHB
