COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Winners Circle Collective, led by Kansas City professional athletes, is hosting multi-day events from June 27 to June 29 to empower local youth with sports clinics and community programs. Legacy Makers Field Day is underway today at Gregg Center—this event offers families a chance to celebrate local pride and learn about community resources.  KSHB
  • Great Plains SPCA will offer free pet microchipping from June 29 to July 3 for residents (Shawnee, Lenexa, Leawood, Overland Park, Prairie Village, Bonner Springs and Lake Quivira) at its clinic on Antioch Drive in Merriam to keep pets safe during July 4 fireworks. Owners from outside these areas will pay $10 with a donation and can visit between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. with no appointment required.  KCTV 5

CRIME NEWS

  • The Overland Park Police Department launched a new webpage dedicated to solving cold cases that lists eight cases, including one from 1973, and provides victim photos and details—residents with information are urged to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-8477.  FOX 4 KC
  • The Kansas Supreme Court overturned Devonte Wash’s murder conviction in Johnson County because prosecutors made errors—court papers said the mistakes may have affected the evidence used in his life sentence.  KCTV 5

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new Walmart beef facility in Olathe opened Friday, bringing over 600 jobs and adding more than 1,000 construction jobs to build a 30,000‑square‑foot facility—Governor Laura Kelly attended the ribbon‑cutting as the Walmart Foundation donated $90,000 to local charities.  KCTV 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • The EPA has given $854k to reduce lead in drinking water at schools and child care facilities, with Kansas receiving $374k and Missouri $480k—part of a larger effort to protect children from the harmful effects of lead.  FOX 4
