  • Johnson County Parks & Recreation is hosting a free FIFA World Cup watch party series with 28 match screenings over 20 days on a 20-by-30 LED screen. Residents can register now to join the community event.  KCTV 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four local school districts signed an MOU to sue the state for not meeting its special education funding obligations. They plan to secure legal counsel to address deficits that have affected over 83,000 students since 2011.  KSHB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Light rain and a few thunderstorms are expected from Thursday night into Friday morning during First Alert Weather Impact Days for the region — streams and rivers already high may lead to localized flooding by Memorial Day weekend.  KMBC News

  • The City of Overland Park announced Wednesday that its new digital store will sell community-themed apparel and soccer merchandise for the World Cup; the store will feature products made locally (supporting Kansas City-based businesses).  KCTV 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • First Hand Foundation is taking over funding free health screenings serving 18,000 elementary students after Oracle cut its support last month; the program, which checks vision, hearing & dental health, will continue next school year in several Kansas City metro districts and cover follow-up care for these students.  KSHB
  • Trauma survivors gathered at St. Luke's yesterday during National Trauma Survivors Day to thank care teams who saved lives. Catherine Montgomery said her 27 year old son, who was in a head on collision last October, felt renewed hope + gratitude at the hospital.  KSHB

  • Olathe South's star basketball player, Eve Long, has committed to Notre Dame after announcing her decision on Wednesday at her school's gym with her junior season still in progress. She chose Notre Dame over offers from UConn, UCLA, Duke (and Kansas).  KCTV 5
