- ➤ Overland Park firefighters responded on May 11 to a garage fire caused by a malfunctioning lithium battery, and video from the scene has been shared. Kansas Speedway saw Kyle Larson win his third straight NASCAR race for Chevrolet + the broadcast also noted growth in local film, a new BikeWalkKC safety campaign, and nearing completion of upgrades to the KC Live canopy in the Power and Light district. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Firefighters responded to a home fire near 117th and Craig on May 11 when a lithium battery in a hoverboard malfunctioned, and one resident was taken to a hospital with minor smoke inhalation. Investigators advise residents to inspect lithium batteries before each use to avoid future incidents. KCTV 5
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Amazon awarded Future Engineer Scholarships to high-achieving students from the Kansas City metro area—Trinh Ha from Overland Park and Dimitri Nguyen from Kansas City will each receive up to $40,000 over four years along with a paid Amazon internship. - ➤ The Kansas Department of Revenue announced a new blackout-style license plate featuring an all-black design with white letters and a white state decal that will be available for purchase on July 1—responding to many Kansans’ requests. The plate will be offered for standard vehicles and motorcycles at local county treasurer offices for a one-time fee of $40, an annual royalty fee of $50, and an optional personalization fee of $45.50.
