COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fred Dantzler, owner of Officially Chopped Barbershop, will host the second annual Fishing for Success event at Shawnee Mission Park this Sunday to take 42 children fishing and serve them a fresh lunch—he is also asking for donations and volunteers to support the event. Most of the participating children come from single-parent or foster care households, and Dantzler hopes the event will build hope and leadership among local youth.  KSHB

CRIME NEWS

  • The Overland Park Police are searching for a 30-pound black, brown, and white short-hair terrier and its slender Asian owner, aged 25 to 30 with dark hair, after the dog bit a person near West 95th Street and Mission Road around 2 p.m. Thursday and the victim was taken to the hospital.  KMBC News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Overland Park released a new brand this week and invites residents, visitors, business owners, and students to help design the next city flag using the brand guide—submissions are due by June 1 and staff will review designs in early June to create a final flag that will fly daily at City facilities.  FOX 4 KC
  • The Johnson and Wyandotte County CASA said a DOJ letter canceled a $100,000 federal grant—affecting support services for about 100 foster children while they serve over 800 in the system. The organization said it will work harder to maintain resources and support for the children amid the funding cut.  KSHB

HEALTH NEWS

  • Johnson County has taken steps to expand 24/7 mental health care as the board approved $1.2 million for 18 positions at an adult crisis stabilization center and an additional $225,000 to add three specialists to the 988 crisis line—efforts designed to ease emergency room boarding. The new 14-bed center at The Recovery Place in Shawnee will complete hiring in the next three to six months and begin serving adults in need of support for mental health challenges.  KCTV 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • Armand Membou, a Lee’s Summit native and graduate of Lee's Summit North, was selected by the New York Jets as the seventh overall pick in the NFL Draft last night. Kansas City fans cheered his success—showing strong local pride in his achievement.  KMBC News
  • The Kansas City Chiefs picked Ohio State offensive tackle Josh Simmons with the final first-round draft pick on Thursday night—hoping he will boost the protection for their quarterback after a rough season. Simmons missed most of last season after tearing his patellar tendon and will be closely watched during rookie minicamp.  KSHB
