COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Larry Smith, principal at Arrowhead Middle School, was named an NFL official for the upcoming season after a six-year process. He will take tests and attend a clinic before receiving his crew assignment in about three weeks (he was a Big Ten official before) and will share more details with students in the school newsletter later this week.  KCTV 5

ECONOMY NEWS

  • University of Kansas’ Trade War Lab is learning about the trade conflict between the US and China as it studies rapid tariff changes including a 125% tariff on China and China’s raised tariffs on US goods. Political science assistant professor Jack Zhang and his team will examine how these shifts may impact Kansas farmers—particularly soybean producers—with research to be shared with the public.  KSHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Johnson County began repairing the bridge on U.S. Highway 69 over Merriam Drive on Monday and expects to finish by Friday, April 18—drivers are urged to use an alternate route as both eastbound and westbound lanes are reduced to one during daylight hours. The $381,000 project is managed by KDOT.  FOX 4 KC
  • Evenezer Cortez Martinez, a DACA recipient from Roeland Park, was denied entry after an approved trip to visit his grandparent's grave and was sent back to Mexico City; he reunited with his family after legal counsel confirmed his valid paperwork. His attorney said he met all requirements despite an unexpected removal order, and he felt relieved to be home.  FOX 4 KC

HEALTH NEWS

  • A 2024 BankRate survey found nearly half of U.S. adults said money harmed their mental health—Kansas Citian Courtney Holl, a mother of two, shared she was working extra hours to cope with rising costs. Mental health expert Sara Schlagel from Children’s Mercy—Camber Mental Health said self-care measures like journaling and yoga help manage stress.  KSHB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Before the state playoffs, Shawnee Mission East Boys Varsity Soccer team started a donation drive where each goal brought in contributions to help Gift of Sole. The team raised over $3,000 and its seniors led the effort—marking the largest donation in the program’s history.  KSHB
