COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Local nonprofit organizations face uncertainty from new tariffs and executive orders that cut funding and strain basic services. Olathe's Center of Grace, which serves about 30,000 people yearly, will relaunch its food pantry this summer—record calls for food help are pressuring the center to secure more donations. KSHB
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Jesus Neri-Aguilar pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and aggravated battery and was sentenced to over seven years in prison for fatally stabbing 26-year-old Juan Jose Balleza-Ojeda and injuring another man during the Nov. 11, 2023 incident in Olathe+ his consecutive sentence will be served as required by court records. - ➤ A 24-year-old man from Olathe was sentenced Monday in Johnson County court to 92 months in prison after pleading guilty in February to voluntary manslaughter + aggravated battery for a November 11 stabbing that left one person dead and another injured. FOX 4 KC
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Shawnee Mission School District is expanding its pre-K program next year by adding 60 new spots and pre-K classrooms in two more elementary schools so more children can get a head start in learning. The program will offer half-day classes and extra care from the YMCA and Johnson County Parks and Recreation while many students may attend for free through Title I and special education funding. - ➤ The advanced woodshop class at Center High School teamed up with Rendezvous Climbing Gym to build a table that was unveiled Monday after five months of work. Local leaders, teachers, and the school band — joining the event — marked the project as a hands-on learning experience for the students. KSHB
