COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture canceled $500 million in food bank funding, which caused Harvesters to lose 41,000 cases of food from its Emergency Food Assistance Program that delivers 2.4 million pounds annually. Harvesters now serves over 900 nonprofits and 340,000 people across 27 counties—local agencies are urging food and monetary donations as demands rise.  FOX 4 KC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Officials in Johnson County reported Tuesday evening that the school bond vote passed—tallying 2,236 yes and 1,581 no—to approve a $100 million bond that will fund a new elementary school, convert Sunflower Elementary into a special needs early childhood center, upgrade playgrounds, improve safety and common spaces at Gardner Edgerton High School, and build a new district service center.  KCTV 5
  • Voters approved a $251 million bond in 2023 to upgrade school facilities—this money will replace mobile classrooms with permanent buildings at Cedar Hills and Leawood Elementary Schools. The improvements are set to finish in July so new classrooms can be ready for the next school year.  KSHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Overland Park Police Department announced Tuesday it will launch PowerEngage— a software that sends text surveys after calls for service so community members can share feedback. The department said the program will not replace face-to-face interactions and it aims to improve transparency.  KCTV 5
  • Overland Park officials announced that starting Sunday, April 6 at 5 p.m., 167th Street from Metcalf Avenue to Antioch Road will close for six months of construction as part of the 69 Express project—U.S. 69 Highway will operate with one lane in both directions until early October when the road and its ramps reopen. The project will add south-facing ramps and upgrade the interchange to improve access on 69 Highway.  KCTV 5
