ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters from Overland Park and Olathe responded to a house fire Thursday night near 117th Street and Nieman Road and extinguished the flames in a two-story home after the occupants evacuated; two adults and a child were displaced while a missing cat was later found safe.  KMBC News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Panasonic is working to open its new electric vehicle battery plant in De Soto that will hire 4,000 workers & honor the legacy of women from the old Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant. The project builds on the example of former plant manager Gayla Frazier & marks a new era of opportunity for women in industry.  KSHB

CRIME NEWS

  • The Kansas Bureau of Investigation issued a statewide silver alert for 94-year-old Donald Mueller from Tonganoxie who was last seen driving a dark green 2016 Nissan Frontier with Vermont tag 515A791 while heading toward Basehor, and police said he walks with a limp and has health issues that may affect his ability to get home safely so anyone who sees him should call 911.  KSHB
  • Overnight, the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department recovered about 100 shell casings from a triple shooting near S. 16th Street and Ridge Avenue where three men with gunshot wounds were taken to the hospital—none of the victims were killed and no arrests have been made.  KSHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials from Kansas City, Missouri, Liberty, Overland Park and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas signed proclamations on March 27th to mark the first National Tuskegee Airmen Day. The ceremony honored the Tuskegee Airmen for breaking racial barriers in the military—an event that celebrated their historic legacy—at the Downtown Airport.  KSHB
  • Today, the USDA canceled $500 million in food bank funding that was set to deliver 41,000 cases of food in April for low-income residents served by groups like Harvesters—this cut has eliminated two egg shipments of 750 cases each, 825 cases of cheese and 800 cases of chicken, forcing the food bank to look for new supplies. Harvesters now faces immediate challenges as it works to fill the gap for families who depend on its services.  KMBC News

  • After Royals catcher Salvador Perez visited last fall, a group of kids known as Salvy's Sandlot got a once-in-a-lifetime invite to Opening Day ceremonies at Kauffman Stadium on Thursday— they sat in the press room and met Manager Matt Quatraro and players— marking a special day for the team of young fans.  KSHB
  • The Kansas City Royals will host the Cleveland Guardians at Kauffman Stadium today at 3:10 p.m. following an extra-innings loss on Thursday — fans have shown opening day pride on social media as weather forecasts predict warm, mostly dry conditions with brief storms at the start and end of the day —.  KCTV 5
